The Brazilian education sector is formed of 4 main segments: pre-school, primary, secondary and superior education. The number of schools decreased from 206 thousand to 191 thousand between 2006 and 2014. Private education plays a tremendous role in superior education, holding about 87% of schools and 73% of enrolments. In primary and secondary education, the private sector is less relevant but has increased its share from 17% to 21% over the past 8 years. Distance education has grown in popularity, covering a variety of subjects and education levels. International education is becoming more relevant and Canada remains the first destination for Brazilian students.
