The Brazilian energy sector is regulated by three Governmental levels and increased its installed capacity from 91 GW in 2004 to almost 147 GW in 2016. In this context, electricity consumption dropped from 473 to 465 GWh in 2015 with industries consuming 37% thereof. The top 10 energy conglomerates in Brazil hold 52% of distribution and participate in all segments: generation, transmission and distribution. Renewable sources correspond to over 71% of the electricity matrix and with sugarcane bagasse representing the main feedstock. Among the 45 main companies in the country, energy businesses with assets of US$ 15 billion and above had the highest EBIT margins in 2015 (15.6%), followed by small companies with assets of US$ 1 to 2.5 billion. Unlike in 2014, middle-size businesses had EBIT varying from -2% to 11%.
