The Brazilian food sector has reached an estimated revenue of over R$ 173 billion in 2015, growing at a high CAGR of 14.6% since 2007 and representing 10.5% of the national GDP. The industry employs nearly 1.7 million people in Brazil and the meat segment represents 28% of the sector’s turnover. Food exports have been decreasing over the past 5 years but the trade balance remains positive and considerably above the trade balance of Brazil: US$ 35 billion versus US$ US$ 8 billion in 2015. Many of the sector’s top players are part of international conglomerates and most food segments have shown positive EBITDA and return indices in 2014. In the global scenario, the food industry has grown at an average annual rate of merely 5.3% since 2008.
