The Brazilian payments sector is estimated to have reached 22.6 billion transactions in 2015 with a base of 477 million cards. Card transactions amounted to 12.6 billion with transaction value of US$ 330 billion. Large banking groups dominate the segment with credit cards representing 63% of online payments in Brazil, however 33% of retail purchases are still paid in cash. The average ticket for credit cards is almost twice as high as for debit cards in the country. Cielo and Redecard hold 87% market share as acquirers but there is considerable room for growth for non-cash payments in the country: 14 billion in Brazil vs. 143 billion in the United States in 2013.
