BMI View: Bulgaria's power sector is well developed with universal access to the grid and numerouscross-border connections to neighbouring states. The country is a net exporter and with domesticconsumption set to grow only slowly over the forecast period, Bulgaria will continue to boast an energysurplus to supply electricity exports. There are currently few projects in the development pipeline, withinvestors deterred by the slow consumption growth, lack of financial incentives and ongoing concernssurrounding corruption in the tendering process. Some work is taking place on the national grid to reducelosses and expand cross-border connections with neighbouring states and over the longer term there areplans to invest in new nuclear capacity which will stimulate some growth in the power sector but for thetime being our forecasts remain muted.

Latest Updates And Structural Trends

- Without the addition of any additional new projects to the power project pipeline, we are maintaining ourforecasts for minimal growth in generation in Bulgaria's power sector throughout the forecast period.Efficiency and output improvements mean total generation is forecast to increase from 45.52TWh in2016 to 46.93TWh in 2025.

- Work continues on the expansion of regional natural gas pipeline connections. In January 2016 Romanianstate-owned gas pipeline operator Transgaz announced it will receive EUR179mn (USD194mn) grantfrom the European Commission to build the Romanian section of a gas pipeline connecting Bulgaria,Romania, Hungary and Austria. The EUR560mn (USD610mn) scheme, which involves development of a550km natural gas interconnector with a total annual capacity of 1.5bn cubic metres (cu m) towardsBulgaria and 4.4bn cu m towards Hungary, is reportedly slated for completion in 2019.

- ReneSola has reportedly sold two solar power projects in Bulgaria, with capacity of 5.0MW and 4.7MW,to the Luxembourg based private equity fund Solar World Invest Fund, which has acquired a range ofsolar power plants globally. At present there are no major renewable projects planned in Bulgaria and thelack of government incentives means major investment is unlikely in the near future.
