Rheology modifiers are used to maintain the viscosity, impart shine to paints, avoids accumulation of the pigments during the transportation and storage of the paints and many more. They are used mainly to maintain the viscosity characteristics of a liquid. Cellulose is the majorly used rheology modifier type and is used mainly in paper coating color formulations. Acrylic based is the next majorly used rheology modifier across the globe.
Rheology modifiers have various applications such as paints & coatings, cosmetics & personal care, pharmaceuticals, chemical, construction, rubber & plastics and others. The major application for this market is paints & coatings where the demand is high from APAC region. These are used mainly to control the flow properties of paints & coatings so that when used, the paints won’t be as liquid as water and will give a good texture to the base.
Rheology modifiers are manufactured with various compositions by which they can affect the pour point, viscosity index, kinematic viscosity, or dispersion of various materials. Thickener/gelling agents are the majorly used composition which greatly influences the application of paints, adhesives and other gels.
