BMI View: A confluence of factors are set to aid real GDP growth in the Netherlands in 2016, namelydomestic demand, bolstered by a fiscal stimulus package, and a sustained recovery in the housing market, which provide upside risk to our freight forecasts. Net exports will make only a modest contribution togrowth due to stagnating external demand from the eurozone and lower gas export volumes, however. Railfreight is set to be the outperforming mode over the course of 2016, benefiting from investment, whileeconomic growth in the main trade partner Germany is underpinning trade growth and therefore spurringon the Dutch freight modes.

Latest Updates and Forecasts

- The strongest growth is expected in the rail freight sector as it benefits from increased demand for crudeoil and fuel due to lower prices. Rail freight along with road freight will also benefit from investment andbetter infrastructure connectivity across Europe.

- Export growth has been the engine of the Dutch economy for the past few decades and we see nothing tosuggest that this will change over the next two years. Imports and exports are worth 70% and 80% ofGDP respectively, which translates into a massive current account surplus that stood at 10.3% of GDP in2014. Export growth will be underpinned by rising eurozone demand, as the region continues to benefitfrom lower oil prices,

- The Netherlands' top trade partners will be Germany, Belgium, France, the UK and China.
