BMI View: North Africa's telecoms sectors are rapidly evolving from voice-centric markets towards onesdriven by data consumption, with mobile broadband being one of the core drivers. 3G has been launchedwith success in Algeria and Tunisia, and the licensing and roll-out of 4G services is on track in bothcountries. Success depends on the macroeconomic situation: higher purchasing power helps with thedevelopment of the telecoms market, while the security situation is always at the forefront in the region.

- The wireline voice telephony markets in Algeria and Tunisia declined in 2015 due to mobile and IPsubstitution. The wireline broadband market was also impacted by the advance of 3G services.

- Currency depreciations had a negative impact for international operators present in Algeria and Tunisia,as USD-denominated ARPU declined.

- 4G LTE services were launched in Tunisia in April 2016. Algeria is looking to fast-track the licensing of4G, although 3G services have only just been introduced.
