The Malaysian government introduced annual service taxes for credit and charge cards from January 2010, with these resulting in many cardholders cancelling some or all of their charge cards. Cardholders are taxed RM50 annually for an initial credit or charge card and RM25 annually for each additional card. The government thus hopes to encourage a more responsible approach to consumer credit and to reduce levels of personal debt. There was thus 1% decline in card volume for personal charge cards...
