Executive Summary
Double-play and triple-play models have been around since the early 1990s, when cable telephony was added to cable TV offerings. Various telcos and media companies have attempted mergers, alliances and partnerships to move into this new area; however the full digitalisation of their networks and increased broadband penetration was necessary before a more economically viable model could be developed. A number of the more highly developed economies in Asia have been moving into the area of convergent and triple-play networks. Governments and operators have been facing the challenge of upgrading infrastructure and architecture. Not surprisingly, Japan and South Korea have been early adopters of the triple-play model and have made significant progress, this having spilled over into Hong Kong, Taiwan and other Asian markets. And, not unexpectedly, China has been making a strong showing in its embracing of converging technologies.
Internet and telecommunications businesses have gained a head start in the Internet broadcast market, so TV broadcasters are expected to experience difficulty gaining market share in such areas as VoD. That being said, broadcasters have ample content and production expertise to use in their fight back.
