- The OEM market is expected to grow from nearly $6.7 billion in 2016 to nearly $8.1 billion in 2021 at a CAGR of 3.8% for the period 2016-2021.
- Aftermarket as a segment over the next five years will grow from nearly $7.5 billion in 2016 to $10.4 billion in 2021 at a CAGR of 6.9% for the period 2016-2021.

STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
A universal serial bus (USB) connection is one of the most important ways to provide power to a portable electronic device. USBs are available in many configurations. They can connect to:
- A house current electrical socket (one of several global designs).
- An automobile cigarette lighter or power adapter.
- A portable battery (i.e., a power bank).
In all cases, a key design feature is the cable that connects the power source to the portable product. This is the bus itself. The cable may be a component of the battery charger or it may connect to a battery charger built into a portable product or a battery within the portable product.

The USB was developed in the mid-1990s to standardize cabling and connectors for portable devices, small electronic devices and communications equipment. Originally most important for data connectivity, the rapidly evolving portable product market soon resulted in increasingly sophisticated battery charging or power provision USB connectors. Initially, purpose-built and proprietary designs proliferated. More recently, the trend has been convergence on fewer interchangeable designs. The end result could be one predominant interface design that can be used to charge or power most portable battery-powered devices and many small electric devices.

This report tracks this market, discusses competitors, details target applications and profiles companies. Driving forces, including government-mandated standardization, energy efficiency and safety considerations, are described. Price drivers are considered. Technology, applications, players and recent commercial developments are also described.

METHODOLOGY
Both primary and secondary research methodologies were used in preparing this report, which is based on interviews with commercial and government sources, literature reviews and patent examinations. An in-depth analysis of technical and business literature and published dissertations; a review of the history of the technologies involved; and interviews with industry experts, company representatives, federal government researchers and university scientists provide an assessment of the outlook for USB battery charger devices. Other information sources include product literature from suppliers, scientific references, conferences and patent searches. Most market summaries are based on a consensus scenario that assumes no unanticipated technical advances and no unexpected legislation. Throughout the report, past market data is expressed in current dollars, and estimates and projections are in constant 2016 dollars. Historic and current markets and the projected market for 2021 are provided.

INTENDED AUDIENCE
This report is intended to provide a unique analysis of the USB battery charger market. Makers of USB battery chargers, power banks and other USB-compatible devices will directly benefit from this report. Designers, manufacturers and users of the vast suite of USB compatible products will also benefit. BCC Research wishes to thank those companies, government agencies and university researchers that contributed information for this report.

INFORMATION SOURCES
Market assumptions used in this report include those based on updates of material from an earlier version of this analysis, as well as from BCC Research studies prepared by the author. The author was also a long-time editor of the BCC Research newsletters and author of numerous reports, including portable product and battery charger reports. Many segments of the industry are well-documented, but much of this information is based on estimates rather than hard facts. The distinction between these estimates and hard facts can be vital. Sources are identified whenever possible.
