Basin Electric Power Cooperative (Basin Electric) is a non-profit generation and transmission electric utility, engaged in generating electricity and delivering it to distribution cooperatives which together forms member systems. Basin Electric generates power through diverse energy sources such as coal, hydro, nuclear, gas and wind. The cooperative also provides power marketing and telecommunications services. As on 2011, the cooperative owns 3,437 MW and operates a total of 4,424 MW of electric generating capacity. It maintains 2,178 miles of high-voltage transmission lines, of which owns 2,093 miles. Basin Electric also owns 66 switchyards and 116 telecommunication sites. Its service territory spans over 540,000 square miles across nine states. Besides, the cooperative consists of 135 member cooperative systems, which supply electricity to 2.8 million consumers within North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Montana, and New Mexico. It operates through eight subsidiaries in the region. Basin Electric is headquartered in North Dakota, the US.
