The number of charge cards in circulation declined further in 2016, following the closure of Diners Club services in Benelux in 2014, leaving American Express as the main issuer of charge cards in the Netherlands. Although this had an impact on the number of cards in circulation, it did not have adverse effects on the number of transactions and value of transactions in 2016. Instead, transaction value increased driven by the improvement in the economy, which spurred consumption.
