EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
For the purposes of this study the cheese market was segmented into the following
- Processed (spreads, slices and others)
- White (e.g. cream cheese spread, feta, mozzarella, and other local varieties)
- Mature (e.g. edam, brie, gouda, cheddar, gruyere, parmesan, etc)
The year 2006 was a difficult year for some of the 50 markets examined in this study with consumer and industrial demand being dampened by increasing global prices for cheese, political turmoil in the MENA region and other problems such as foot and mouth disease affecting raw milk supply. However, on the basis of our analysis and understanding of the development of these cheese markets since 2002, the publisher believes:
- The MENA, Asia and Latin American regions will be increasingly important to international suppliers over the next five years, particularly as markets in Europe and North America mature.
and
- The fragmented nature of supply and different varieties of cheese available require companies to develop market strategies specific to markets they are attempting to develop.
