Executive Summary
Key Note estimates that the UK market for document imaging equipment was worth £2.23bn in 2010, after increasing by 13.4% over the 5-year review period. Growth over the review period was strong and market value rose year-on-year, however this did slow slightly towards the end of the 5-year period, due to the recession and the saturation of the market. Investment and business confidence were therefore at a low in late 2009 and early 2010, causing market growth to slow.
The market is segmented into the following sectors — printers and ‘all-in-one’ machines; copiers and copier/printers; fax-based machines; and scanners. These sectors are further subdivided by equipment features, such as speed and colour or monochrome printing.
The market has seen a major shift towards multifunction peripherals (MFPs), which amalgamate the functions of several machines into one unit. The growing popularity of such products has, however, meant that sales of single-function printers and flatbed scanners have suffered.
Although the capabilities of colour printing and scanning have been around for several years, it is only recently that copying in colour has become popular. Traditionally, the monochrome, analogue copier had reigned supreme in office environments. However, this is now changing, with many opting to use colour copiers as the technology becomes more affordable.
Sales of fax machines and fax-based machines decreased during the review period and are likely to continue to do so in the future, entering terminal decline, as email and Internet communications render them obsolete.
Between 2011 and 2015, Key Note expects the market to grow by 12.9%. This growth will be driven by a rise in volume sales, as companies begin to replace older, outdated models with newer versions; as well as rising input costs, which will push up the price of peripheral equipment. Key Note also predicts fairly strong growth in the leasing/rental market for photocopiers, as companies begin to reign in their spending and may opt to rent otherwise expensive machinery as a way of cutting costs.
