The research presents actual information about the market of fitness services and its state as of December 2010. The Russian market of fitness services is falling behind from the Western one with about 20-30 years. In addition, if in Moscow a few clubs a month are opened, in the other regions the niche is practically free. Nevertheless, by the dynamics of growth in the number of fitness centers, Russia is ahead of the leading fitness powers of the world. The number of fitness clubs in the country is more than 2 thousand, about one third of which are located in the capital. With a population of 12 - 13 million people, in Moscow the level of penetration of fitness services amounts to only 3%. The world average for large cities is about 6 - 16%. Until 2008, the Russian market for fitness services had been continuously growing at a very high pace - at least 20% growth per year. But the crisis somewhat slowed down this growth and in 2009 there was even a reduction in services. However, 2010 is characterized by positive trends. Experts predict that by 2011 the market will have already recovered to the pre-crisis volumes. The biggest players in the market are Russian Fitness Group (the sets of clubs "World Class" and "Fizcult"), "Planet Fitness" (the set "Planet Fitness"), "Strata Partners" (the sets "Orange Fitness" and "CityFitness"). The most active consumers of fitness services are the young people aged 20 to 35 years. Moreover, the most active group of visitors is women. The new market conditions during the crisis period significantly reduced the solvency of the population. Experts point out that the market has now reached a sufficiently high level of consumer culture and it will not be allowed to revert too much back to its development. Especially, because many see sport as a way to escape from stress, so they are simply moving to a lower price segment in the time of crisis rather than ceasing their all sport activities. One of the major problems, hindering the development of the market of fitness services, is constantly increasing the rents and a lack of suitable premises. Also, the fact that the market of fitness centers is unsaturated is explained by analysts by the high threshold to enter the market. In addition, as another deterrent factor is given the low level of profitability and, consequently, the long payback period of the fitness clubs. The aim of the marketing research is to describe the situation on the Russian market of fitness services, to present actual information about the state of the market, as well as the changed that took place in 2009 and 2010.
