China Mobile Phone Export Report, 2006-2007
In 2006, the mobile phone output of China reached 455 million units, accounting for 43.75% of world total output of 1.04 billion units.
It is the mobile phone export but not the domestic market demands that drive cell-phone production capacity to gradually increase. Due to the low labor force cost, overseas cell-phone giants have set out to transfer global mobile phone manufacturing center to China since 2002 and turn China to be global mobile phone processing and foreign trade transferring bases.
According to the data from China Customs and Ministry of Commerce, in 2006, China mobile phone export volume created another record high, reaching 385 million units which increased by 69.1% year on year; export value achieved USD 31.214 billion, up 52.6% from a year earlier.
Although China domestic mobile phone manufacturers lag far behind global leading counterparts, they have got to grow up and tapped into international market in the rampant competition for Chinese market – the world’s largest mobile phone market.
The data from China Customs, Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Information Industry shows that during 2001-2006 periods, China domestic mobile phone manufactures have witnessed a rapid growth in mobile phone export, from 510,000 units in 2002 to 32.61 million units in 2006.
Home-made mobile phones were mainly exported to the developing countries of South East Asia and South Asia such as India and Vietnam in 2006. But home-made mobile phones are exported to these countries in terms of cooperative brands, which indicate that the home-made mobile phone brands do not have strong influences in the overseas markets.
