Discount Retailing Market Report 2013

  • March 2013
  • -
  • Key Note Publications Ltd

Executive Summary

This Key Note Market Update examines the UK discount retailing market, which is divided into two principal categories: discount grocery retailers and discount non-grocery retailers. The grocery sector comprises retail brands such as Aldi, Lidl and Iceland; while the non-grocery sector includes retailers that stock non-food items such as clothing, footwear and homeware, including the Primark, TK Maxx and Poundland chains.

The UK discount retailing market experienced year-on-year growth between 2008 and 2012, increasing by an overall 31%. The grocery sector enjoyed a greater growth rate of 33.4% over this period, while the value of the non-grocery sector increased by 30.1% over the 5 years.

Discount non-grocery retailers have a significant presence on the high street and a wide consumer base, due to the variety of products that they offer. These retailers focus predominantly on clothing and footwear, and have enjoyed a period of strong growth due to the ‘fast fashion’ trend, making it possible for consumers to purchase low-priced yet fashionable items on a more regular basis.

Primark and Matalan are two significant players in the discount non-grocery market, creating cat-walk trends for a fraction of the price. A quick product turnaround and new stock are also important for these types of retailers, in order to maintain consumer interest, with some collections updated as often as twice a week. This has enabled many discount clothing retailers to increase their market share, as they are more able to cater for consumers looking to keep up with the latest trends at an affordable price.

The discount grocery sector in the UK continues to be led by foreign-owned companies that have successfully migrated their business models and operations to the UK. For instance, the two worldwide market leaders, Aldi and Lidl, are both German-owned, and have achieved an increase in sales in the UK over the past few years.

The recent horsemeat scandal has shocked many British consumers and damaged their confidence in the food sold by supermarkets. Research firm, Consumer Intelligence, conducted a survey in February 2013, which found that a fifth of adults in Britain agreed that they had started buying less meat following the scandal. Experts suggested that the discovery of horse meat in burgers and ready meals has prompted shoppers to question to what degree they can trust what is in their supermarket food. Consumers may now ask whether the cheaper alternative is really an alternative at all, and some may be prepared to pay more for products with a quality guarantee.

Key Note forecasts that the total UK discount retailing market will grow by 20.2% between 2013 and 2017. Growth will be stronger for the discount grocery sector, at 26.1% over the forecast period, compared with 17.8% for the discount non-grocery sector.
