BMI View:

The Austrian mobile market contracted modestly in the first half of 2016, with two of the three major operators reporting minor contractions in terms of subscriber numbers. The market remains saturated as new MVNOs show continued dominance of the no-frills segment. Consumers are now accustomed to cheaper prices for basic services despite operators' efforts to develop and expand their mobile content and services portfolio. Mobile broadband continues to hold the lion's share of the broadband sector. Latest Updates And Industry Developments

- The mobile market expanded for two consecutive quarters in Q315 and Q415 - the first time it did so since 2012. Latest data from H116 suggests that the market contracted again, losing 77,000 subscribers by end of June 2016.

- Dedicated mobile broadband remains the largest component of all broadband connections according to Q315 regulatory data, with 2.14mn subscriptions out of a total market of 4.56mn.

- The strength of no-frills plans affected the uptake of premium services; with just 438,900 LTE subscribers compared to 10.9mn 3G subscribers as of Q315.
