BMI View:
The Japanese government has made tourism an integral part of their plans to invigorate the economy, and combined with the country's natural strengths as a tourist destination, this has led to an enviable surge in inbound arrivals and tourism revenue. Although the country is unlikely to see a repeat of 2015's 47% y-o-y increase in arrivals in the near future, we expect healthy growth in arrivals over the 5 year forecast period, and downside risks to growth are relatively low given strong government support for the industry and the fact that the country will be hosting major international sporting events in 2020 and 2026.

Key Updates and Forecasts

- Japan is proving highly innovative when it comes to attracting potential visitors. In April 2016 the government announced plans to develop a system whereby international tourists can register to make payments using their fingerprints. The first test phase is due to be rolled out to 300 souvenir shops, restaurants, hotels and other establishments in popular tourism destinations. Another high tech innovation is the Japanese National Tourism Organisation's new public database of open-license images and video for the promotion of tourism by 3rd parties.

- In a bid to draw on the appeal of Japanese population culture and take advantage of the increasing spending power of millennials who grew up after the international spread of Japanese animation and manga, the country has established 88 'Animation Spots', which are locations which have acted as important settings in famous animated films or manga.
