BMI View:
Angola's total power generation will increase by an annual average of 6.1% from 2017 to 2025, owing to new hydropower and thermal capacity being brought online. The Soyo combined cycle power plant will increase thermal power investment interest as domestic gas production is increased. Withdrawal of funding will delay the commissioning of the Laúca hydropower plant, which we now forecast to be fully online by 2019.

Latest Updates And Structural Trends


- The Angolan government's budget, which had to be revised due to lower oil prices, has an amount of USD6bn included to ensure certain projects go ahead as planned. Among these projects is the 2 gigawatt (GW) Laúca hydropower plant and the 750 megawatt (MW) Soyo combined cycle power plant.

- We note delays to hydropower projects are possible as the Brazilian government has suspended financing to projects that were awarded to companies allegedly involved in the Brazilian corruption scandal. These companies include Odebrecht, which is responsible for the construction of the 2,070 megawatt (MW) Laúca hydropower plant. We still expect the project will be brought online, however we have extended the timeline of the commissioning of Laúca, which we forecast to come online in phases from 2017 until 2019.
