Parkas & Windbreakers

China's 9,000 plus suppliers of parkas and windbreakers shipped out US$5.9 billion worth of the products in 2007, producing about 30 percent of the world's output in the line.

But the industry is not without challenges. Rising manufacturing expenses and the appreciating yuan are forcing China suppliers of parkas and windbreakers to raise product prices.

The soaring cost of raw materials, and higher wages and shortage of skilled labor have been adding to production costs. But the intense competition in the industry makes it difficult for suppliers to raise prices.

Many makers are, therefore, shifting focus or increasing production of upscale value-added models. The use of functional textiles will be more prevalent in coming months. Breathability, odor-resistant, UV-protective, antistatic and anti-bacterial features are among the common functions that will be available in new products.

With the help of this report, you too can profit from this dynamic industry.

Manufacturing 30 percent of global supply, China's 9,500 suppliers of parkas and windbreakers shipped out US$5.9 billion worth of the products in 2007. It is estimated that 90 percent of exports go to OEM and ODM customers.

The US is the largest importer of China-made parkas and windbreakers, purchasing 92.7 million pieces worth US$867 million.

Japan is the second largest, importing more than 66 million pieces at a value reaching US$832 million.

But the combined purchases from Germany, Italy, the UK, France and Spain make EU the top importer. Combined exports to the EU reached 206 million pieces worth US$2.1 billion.

The following are some of the key trends we see in China's parkas and windbreakers industry: • Higher material and labor costs remain a challenge for most makers. A number of smaller suppliers that were unable to sustain operations have closed their factories or sold them to larger enterprises.
• Although many companies have already increased prices in 2007, suppliers will be raising quotes in 2008. Many of them, however, will keep adjustments to 10 percent or less.
• The use of functional textiles will be more prevalent in the months ahead. Companies are adopting branded versions such as Taslan, Supplex and Entrant for the shells. Nanotechnology is also employed in certain fabric finishes to enhance the functional properties of the textiles. Breathability, odor-resistant, UV-protective, antistatic and anti-bacterial features are among the common functions that will be available in new products.
• Suppliers will also be increasing production of fashionable parkas and windbreakers. Apart from using rib knits, companies are adopting thinner and lighter fabric that can still provide wind and water resistance.

China makers can offer most types of parkas and windbreakers. Rain, sports, down and ski jackets are also covered in this report.

Knitted jackets, models made of genuine and synthetic leather, and coats, however, are excluded.

The majority of China suppliers offer a range of jackets across all categories, and very few specialize in just one line. In this report, only one company devotes its entire production to parkas.

The features and prices of each jacket type are discussed according to low end, midrange and high end in the Products & Prices section.
