World Industrial Gases
Global demand to increase nearly 7% annually through 2011
World demand for industrial gases will increase nearly 7 percent annually to almost $37 billion in 2011. Volumetric consumption will expand 4.9 percent per year to 300 billion cubic meters. The fastest growth will be in the emerging industrial economies of the Asia/Pacific region, especially those of China and India. Those countries with advanced, highly developed industrial economies will grow more slowly. Other developing regions (Latin America, Eastern Europe and Africa/Mideast) will also experience above average growth.
Metal production, fabrication to dominate demand
Metals production and fabricating will be the largest market sector for industrial gases consumption, and will account for 35 percent of total demand value in 2011. In steel applications, growth will derive from the increasing use of electric arc furnaces, more demand for stainless steel products and more modern manufacturing methods, which consume greater amounts of industrial gases. Geographically, the best growth opportunities will exist in China and India, where steel production continues to grow rapidly. The Japanese steel industry, the world’s second largest after China, still remains a major industrial gas market, though not a high growth one.

More DetailsElectronics, health care to be fastest growing marketsThe electronics and health care industries will be the fastest growing market segments for industrial gases. Gains in electronics applications will benefit from growing demand for semiconductor and integrated circuits used in a growing number of electronic devices. The industry’s move toward the production of 300mm semiconductor wafers will benefit industrial gases. Bulk gases are used by the industry primarily as inert blanketing atmospheres. Specialty gases are used by electronics producers as etchants and cleaning agents. Geographically, the highest growth regions for electronics applications will be in China and Taiwan, though the US, Japan and South Korea are also significant markets.
In medical and healthcare applications, demand will be driven by the expansion of health care services in developing nations, rapidly increasing use of home health care respiratory therapies in advanced economies and by technological advancement in medical imaging, surgical and other practices.
Industrial gases used in chemical processing and petroleum refining applications constitute the second largest gasconsuming category, though its magnitude is less than half that of the metals sector. Gains in the chemicals sector will derive from the increasing use of oxygen and nitrogen in chemical processing applications, often to improve the environmental performance of chemical operations. In petroleum refining, the drive toward cleaner burning, low-sulfur fuels will stimulate demand for hydrogen.
Foods and beverages and other markets (including water treatment, pulp and paper production, glass making, etc.) will record below average gains. In food and beverage markets, growth will come as a result of changing consumer patterns in rapidly industrializing nations and increased consumption of carbonated beverages in some regions. In other applications, growth opportunities exist in such applications as wood pulp delignifi- cation and water treatment, both of which consume oxygen directly and as a precursor for ozone.
