Production & Market of Glyoxalic Acid in China

Glyoxalic acid, a kind of basic organic chemical material, can be used to make many products, which have wide applications. Bourbonal, made from glyoxalic acid, is widely used in the seasonings and cosmetics, raw materials of daily chemical commodities. Allantoin, another downstream product of glyoxalic acid, is used as healer for wound, additive in cosmetics and plant growth regulator. It is also used in the field of medicine. P-hydroxylphenylglycine, an important medical intermediate and widely used to produce lactam series antibiotics, such as syncillin and cephalosporin series medicals, is also made of glyoxalic. Another downstream product of glyoxalic acid, p-Hydroxyphenylacetamide is widely used to produce atenolol, a kind of hypertension medicine.

Driven by the huge demand of its downstream products, China's glyoxalic acid output has been increasing all the time, and the product quality is also improving rapidly. More and more overseas companies have started to import glyoxalic acid from China, with quickly growing volume. In 2006, about 14.27% of China’s glyoxalic acid is exported. but the impact of this trend only limit to the large-scale glyoxalic acid producers, who have mastered the technology of high purity products, while for the small-scale enterprises, who can only produce ordinary glyoxalic acid for the domestic market, it is hard for them to get more benefits from the export.

Affected by the price of its raw material and the supply and demand situation of its downstream products, the price of glyoxalic acid is undergoing great changes recently and it is estimated that the situation will continue for a long time.

Because of environmental reasons, China’s glyoxalic acid production will undergo even huge changes in the future.
