Scope

This project mainly researches 7-ACA along the value chain, including
• Lactams
• Penicillins
• Cephalosporins
• Cefazolin sodium
• Cefoperazone sodium
• Cefotaxime sodium
• Ceftriaxone sodium

Highlights

China started researching on 7-ACA in 1980s, but China had not grasped the production technology until 1999. During that period, a vast amount of capital had been spent on the imported product. These years, China has made great achievement in bulk cephalosporin pharmaceuticals. The short supply of 7-ACA has become the bottleneck for the further development of cephalosporin industry.

In general, China's production of 7-ACA has been weak in the past few years. As a result, China had to spend a lot of money importing 7-ACA from Korea, Italy, Austria, etc. The total output of 7-ACA was only 400 tonnes in 2001, which failed to meet the domestic demand. Since 2002, some large producers planned to increase their production capacity of 7-ACA.

In recent years Chinese 7-ACA industry developed fast, and there are 5 active producers of 7-ACA in China. In 2001, the self-sufficiency rate was only about 20%, but in 2003 it reached 80% and about 15% of homemade 7-ACA was exported. Chinese 7-ACA has become strong and can compete with overseas ones.


In the past years, Chinese manufacturers has successfully exported their 7-ACA to India. There is no doubt that Chinese 7-ACA will occupy more market share in the future. Chinese competitiveness has been enhanced and will be enhanced in the future.
