EMC presses the de-dupe pedal
EMC recently unveiled a set of updates to its backup products, the most important of which revolved around block-level data de-duplication. Because of its hugely beneficial effects reducing data volume, de-dupe is currently an area of keen competition between vendors, and is set to become a standard feature of all backup products.
On one front EMC has updated its Avamar de-duping backup system, in the process addressing what some sources have said was a major shortcoming of the product. On another front the company has added de-dupe to its existing virtual tape libraries (VTLs), and launched new VTLs that also feature data de-duplication.
