• The technology sector recorded 299 M&A deals in June 2008, a decrease of 14.8%, as compared with the trailing six month (Dec 2007–May 2008) average, although in value terms it recorded deals worth $77.2 billion, an increase of 175.9%. The increase in deal value was driven by high value deals in the telecom, software, and hardware sectors.
• Strategic players in the telecom sector continued to look at acquisitions to increase their scale and strengthen their market positions, while the IT services sector witnessed increased M&A activity in the online and mobile marketing, and IT consulting services.
• Venture capitalists invested more than $1.2 billion in 133 companies, a decrease of 18% in value terms over the last six month average, focusing primarily on companies in a growth/expansion stage. Rising oil prices affected the capital raising activity of companies through public offerings.
