Construction sector growth to return in 2014
Total GB construction output volume (at constant 2005 prices) in 2013 is forecast to decline by 1.7% compared to 2012, according to the construction research specialists Leading Edge. Their Summer 2012 forecast predicted that total output would fall by 0.1% this year.

Mel Budd, Managing Director at Leading Edge, commented, “with the economic conditions still remaining subdued and new orders continuing to run at a very low level, it has led us to revise down our forecast from 6 months ago. We forecast that total construction output will not return to overall growth until 2014, when the large cuts to the public sectors are outweighed by the gains in the private residential and commercial markets.”

Mel added, “2013 is a key year for the industry and much will depend on the government’s ability to get the housing sector and key infrastructure projects moving. However, these plans all depend on accessing a large chunk of private investment which has not proved easy to achieve during 2012.”
“With many household incomes remaining squeezed due to low wage growth and high unemployment, the success of the newly launched Green Deal will prove crucial to sustained growth returning to the repair and maintenance sector.”
“There continues to remain a downside risk to our forecast. If the Eurozone or US economies, two of our largest export markets, continue to slip back then lending to developers will reduce and the recovery will be delayed again. A quick return to economic growth is particularly important for the GB regions outside of the South East, where confidence remains particularly low.”
Leading Edge forecasts that total construction output in 2016, at £106,250m, will still be 7.4% lower than the 2007 peak of £114,800m.
