This industry is part of the Retail Trade sector in the US. Operators in this industry retail a broad range of general merchandise including apparel, automotive parts, dry goods, etc. These goods are purchased from domestic (and in some cases international) wholesalers. Operators then retail these goods via their stores to the general public. The majority of goods supplied by this industry are purchased by consumers. It is important to note that those retailers that operate primarily as electronic shopping or mail-order houses, automotive part retailers, department stores, warehouse clubs and superstores, hardware stores, home centers and used merchandise stores are excluded from this industry. NAICS definition: This industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in retailing new goods in general merchandise stores (except department stores, warehouse clubs, superstores, and supercenters). These establishments retail a general line of new merchandise, such as apparel, automotive parts, dry goods, hardware, groceries, housewares or home furnishings, and other lines in limited amounts, with none of the lines predominating.
