Industry Definition

This industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in one or more of the following: (1) reupholstering furniture; (2) refinishing furniture; (3) repairing furniture; and (4) repairing and restoring furniture. Participants offer on site as well as instore furniture reupholstery and repair services. Repair services include chair re-gluing; structural repair and joint stabilization; buffing and polishing of scratches, nicks and dents; and color touch-ups of furniture and upholstery. Reupholstery services include replacement of stuffing, foam, springs or down to replace worn cushioning. Alternatively slipcovers can be used whereby new material is cut and pinned over existing fabrics. Slip-cover services are generally carried out on the reupholstery premises, however some participants offer on-site service, providing mobile reupholstery services. Repair of furniture and antiques, can also be carried out on-site. Not included in this industry are: automotive vehicle upholstery repair services (included in NAICS 81112); and, the restoration of museum pieces (included in NAICS 71151).
