Travel and Tourism - Tunisia - August 2008
About this report
Tunisia is the smallest country in North Africa with a fusion of Arabic, Berber, North African and Mediterranean cultures. It is a country of diverse landscapes – magnificent beaches, harbours and bays on the Mediterranean coast in the north and the stark and haunting landscapes of the Sahara desert in the south. Tunisia is more economically advanced than its neighbours within the Maghreb (Algeria, Libya and Morocco), with a growing per-capita income, middle class, life expectancy and education.
To date, Tunisia’s climate, beaches, proximity to Europe, competitive prices and stability have drawn the majority of its visitors. Despite still rebounding from the effects of 9/11 and a 2002 terrorist attack on its island of Djerba, which killed 21 people – 14 of them German tourists, tourism is the second-largest employer after agriculture and the largest generator of foreign exchange.
