US demand to grow 2.8% annually through 2012 US demand for sealants and caulks is projected to grow 2.8 percent annually through 2012 from a relatively weak 2007 base. Gains will be derived from a recovery in certain key construction markets, particularly new residential construction and nonbuilding markets. In addition, demand in motor vehicle markets is expected to benefit from greater vehicle production and increasing use of sealants and caulks on a per vehicle basis.
Silicone, polyurethane to remain dominant in value In volume terms, the greatest demand continues to be for bituminous, silicone, polyurethane and synthetic elastomer products, all of which have significant use in a variety of different applications. In value terms, demand will continue to be dominated by silicone and polyurethane products, which are both high performance, comparatively high cost materials. Bituminous and synthetic elastomer products, on the other hand, are much lower cost materials, and so account for a smaller portion of demand in value terms.

More Details
Focus on energy efficiency to benefit construction market growth In the dominant construction market (which accounted for more than half of 2007 demand) consumption of sealants and caulks is expected to benefit from a recovery in residential construction, particularly in single-family homes. Gains will derive from expanding new home construction, growth in average home size and greater sealant and caulk intensity of use. Energy efficiency is now a major factor in both new building construction and in improvement and repair projects. As a result, the use of sealants and caulks, which help to prevent air and moisture infiltration, will continue to rise.
Nonbuilding construction markets will also offer strong growth opportunities for sealants and caulks. Construction in both utility and highway and street segments will expand rapidly from a very weak 2007 base. A heightened focus on the nation’s aging infrastructure is expected to spark renewed growth in demand for a variety of sealant and caulk products, including bituminous products used in pavement sealing and silicone sealants utilized in airport runways, bridges, concrete sealing and other civil engineering applications.
Study coverage Sealants & Caulks, a new Freedonia industry study, is available for $4600. It presents historical demand data for 1997, 2002 and 2007, as well as forecasts for 2012 and 2017 by product type and by market. In addition, this study considers market environment factors, evaluates company market share data and profiles 28 competitors in the US industry.
