Tsingtao is China’s oldest brewery, an iconic brand and a leading player in the Chinese beer market. As such, Tsingtao is often seen as a symbol of China’s successful transition to a consumer economy.

However, like Tsingtao, Budweiser is the leading icon beer brand in the US, but its parent company, Anheuser-Busch, has just been bought by a foreign company, InBev of Belgium, raising much patriotic hand-wringing about the loss of an iconic US brand to a foreign interloper.

Anheuser-Busch, however, owns 27% of Tsingtao, the market leader in the world’s largest and fastest growing market. So the question has to be, will Anheuser-Busch-InBev make a bid to take over Tsingtao, and would the Chinese let such an icon local brand become foreign-owned?
