China Methanol Industry Report, 2008

At present there are nearly 200 methanol manufacturers in China, of which majority are small manufacturers whose production is under 100,000 tons / year, and 22 per cent methanol production is produced by natural gas and 78 per cent methanol is based coal as its raw materials.


There were 177 methanol manufacturers in China in 2007, the total scale was over 16 million tons / year. Currently there are 34 methanol production projects are under construction and planned, by 2010 the overall capacity will reach to 26-30.6 million tons / year.


In 2007, China produced 10.1 million tons of methanol. The output of CH30H in Feb 2008 was 99.7 million tons, up 26.1 per cent year-on-year, the same month last year was 790,000 tons; the total output of CH30H of Jan and Feb of 2008 was 1.873 million tons, an increase of 21.4 per cent year-on-year.


In 2007, the monthly apparent consumption of methanol in China broke through over 1 million tons, domestic consumption was the main market, the total apparent consumption of 2007 was 11 million tons, an increase of 31.7 per cent than last year, the actual consumption was 10.6 million tons; particularly in the Aug 2007 the domestic apparent consumption exceeded 1 million tons and in October reached a highest level of 1.1 million tons, compared with the highest level of 846,000 tons in 2006, an increase of 30 per cent.

According to “China's coal chemical industry in the medium and long term development plans" (draft), by 2010, 2015 and 2020, the total output of China's coal made methanol will reach 16, 38 and 66 million tons, and the coal made olefin production will be 1.4, 5 and 8 million tons, while one ton olefin consumes three tons methanol; meanwhile, if the standard of State methanol fuel is able to introduce timely, the market demand of methanol fuel will increase greatly, by 2010 the demand of methanol will reach more than 25 million tons in China.
