• M&A activity in the upstream segment was aimed at increasing scale of operations; the segment recorded private equity investments in alternative oil resource exploration and oil field service companies. Activity in the downstream sector was driven by the fuel retailing and distribution segments, and exits by integrated oil companies in the US.
• Valuations in the energy and utilities sector may be adversely affected in the medium term due to the weak economic growth outlook and liquidity crunch in the financial markets.
