Chewing Gum Market - A Growing Confectionery Segment: 2008 Edition
The global confectionery market comes under packaged food industry and is the fourth largest segment under packaged food. It is also the fastest growing segment of the packaged food industry. Confectionery is further segmented into chocolate confectionery, sugar confectionery and gum. Of the three segments, gum has the lowest share. Chewing gum is also the most concentrated market of the three segments.
The chewing gum industry is dominated by the developed markets. However, the emerging markets are providing the growth impetus to this industry with their economic growth, rising middle class and increasing spending power. With the acquisition of Wrigley by Mars, the combined entity has become the market leader in confectionery market as well as gum segment with Cadbury at second place.
