2007 IPTV / Mobile Video Research Report

For more than 25 years non-broadcast distribution, i.e. not using free over the air television, has been dominated by two distribution topologies that share one critically important attribute. Just as with broadcast, in cable and DBS systems the viewer picks between signals which all are delivered all the way to the home simultaneously. This “broadband” approach essentially replicates the “broadcast” approach. The consumer has access to all of the content, and has essentially all of the control in a local “tuner”, which for cable and satellite is a replication of the approach broadcasting has taken since it’s inception.

Now along comes a totally new approach. One in which the consumer still thinks he has access to anything at any time, but in which the bandwidth of the pipe is vastly restricted. By doing this the carrier, or video service provider, can cut the cost of delivery, and offer a much broader spectrum of choices. Literally thousands of “channels” can be offered since the home receives only one signal at a time for each set connected.

This new topology, most usually called IPTV, uses common information technology (IT) approaches, leveraging the tremendous growth in infrastructure put in place for telephony and data traffic. It is fortunate for both consumers and carriers that the cost of deployment of high bandwidth data networks all the way to the home has dropped. The result is an alternative for the consumer, and a practical way for carriers to compete with the “Triple Play” (voice, video, and data) that cable has been touting for years.

The large carriers, principally Verizon and ATandT (formerly SBC until the acquisition of ATandT announced in January 2005) have dominated the news about IPTV in North America. Driving this deployment is the projected revenue for all video services, growing from $54 Billion in 2004 to $63 Billion in 2008. Broadband deployment in the same time frame is expected to grow to nearly $29 Billion. Some have projected that European IPTV subscriptions will double between 2006 and 2007, to a total of 5.6 million.
