Pleasure Boats in Europe 2009
After a decade of continuous growth, 2008 was the year when the tide began to change. Due to the global economic situation (economic recession, rising inflation, falling GDPSs, etc) and other economic and environmental factors such as the high oil prices, lack of a proper infrastructure and supporting government policies, both revenue and number of boats sold fell in 2008. It is safe to say that this slowdown was felt all over the European Region, though it is the Western region and its stronger dependency on the US economy which was hit the hardest. In the mist of this situation some producers are experiencing surplus in stocks (something unheard of before), downsizing, temporary closing of plants and the need for limiting their production.
Moreover, in times of crisis people will have to forego any luxuries and limit their tight budgets only on basic necessities. The middle class customers are adopting the “wait and see” policy which means they are more cautious on how they spend their money and concentrate more on necessity goods, which of course left pleasure boats out of the equation. One of the consequences is that when it comes to the subgements, the industry became highly polarized around the smaller and larger boat sizes, with middle size boats left behind.
Though the prediction is not good for the next couple of years, the boat industry has always been and should remain a rather healthy market and thereby should recuperate from this significant blow in the years to come.
