During 2002 to 2007, Global butadiene industry maintained relatively fast growth, especially in Asia (excluding the Middle East, and hereafter the same). Global Annual production capacity of butadiene increased from 10 million tons in 2002 to 11.88 million tons in 2007, and the global annual butadiene output increased from 8.08 million tons in 2002 to 10.15 million tons in 2007, with an average annual growth rate of 4.68%. Asia, North America, and Western Europe were the main butadiene supply regions worldwide, the overall supply percentage of Those three regions together were 85.2% in 2007.
Along with the rapid development of china butadiene industry, the national output of butadiene increased from 725,000 tons in 2001 to 1.36 million tons in 2007, with an average annual growth of 9.4%.
China still relies on butadiene import. However, caused by the plants' production expansion of Sinopec Qilu Co., Ltd, Jilin Petrifaction Company, CNPC Lanzhou Chemical Company, and Maoming Petrochemical Corporation as well as the plants' newly-added production of Shanghai Secco Petrochemical Company Ltd, CNOOC and Tianjin Blue Star, the national import is getting less, from 195,900 tons in 2004, to 147,200 tons in 2005, and to 89,200 tons in 2006. However, the import again jumped up to above 100,000 tons, reaching 111,200 tons in 2007. In 2008, the figure is expected to decline to around 98,300 tons.
Changes have taken place to China's butadiene import pattern according to the import sources. Before 2003, china mainly imported butadiene from Korea, Japan and Taiwan. In recent years, China increased its butadiene import from India, America, Brazil, and Holland etc. However, Korea is still the biggest butadiene provider for China.
