Environmental Remediation Industry

Environmental Remediation (which is a major part of the environmental services industry) is the process of removing or neutralizing contaminants that have accumulated during the extraction and processing of raw materials, the consumption of final products, or other human activities. The process minimizes the transfer of harmful materials into clean areas. The primary objective of waste treatment is to protect the community and containment zone personnel from exposure to pathogens that may cause diseases.

Waste is categorized according to the properties it contains. Industrial, municipal, clinical and agriculture are some of the largest waste treatment business sectors.

Veolia, Suez Environment, Remondis and Waste Water Management Inc. are some of the largest waste management companies.

Key Segments

The common methods of decontamination are:

Incineration: this is a high-temperature dry oxidation process that reduces organic and combustible waste to inorganic, incombustible matter, thereby reducing waste volume and weight. This process is usually selected to treat wastes that cannot be recycled, reused, or disposed of in a landfill site.

Ultrasonic cleaning: this is a liquid-based process that creates many minute vacuum bubbles which allow cleaning to take place. This micromechanical scrubbing action is able to reach small crevices, irregular surfaces, and internal passages to ensure proper and consistent cleaning. This method is used routinely within healthcare, laboratory, body art and beauty sectors, but is appropriate whenever cleaning of contaminated reusable items is required.

Chemical disinfection: this is mainly used in the health care industry. Chemicals are added to waste to kill or inactivate the pathogens it contains in this process. This treatment usually results in disinfection rather than complete sterilization. Chemical disinfection is most suitable for treating liquid waste such as blood, urine or hospital sewage. However, solid hazardous health-care wastes, including microbiological cultures, may also be disinfected chemically

Regional Market Shares

The USA, the EU and Asia-Pacific are some of the largest markets for waste management.

The USA waste management industry is highly fragmented with more than 20,000 players. This industry generates more than $70 billion of revenues and of this waste treatment generates more than $14 billion revenues. Waste Management, Inc. and Republic Services are some of the largest providers of waste treatment and management in this country.

The total waste generated in the EU is more than 2.5 billion tonnes. Of this, about 2 billion tonnes of waste is treated in the region. Remondis, ALBA Group and FCC Environment are some of the largest providers of environmental remediation in this region.

Asia –Pacific, due to its exponential growth in industrial activities is likely to end up with huge industrial waste generation. This may give rise to increasing opportunities for the waste recycling and treatment services industry in this part of the world.

Market Outlook

Key trends witnessed in the environmental remediation industry include increasing need for disposal of electronic waste, increased emphasis on recycling in the EU and green methods of waste treatment.

The rapid growth of technology, frequent upgrading of technical innovations and high obsolescence rate of electronic equipment are all leading to increasing disposal rates for electronic products. Global e-waste (electronic waste), currently more than 70 million tons a year, is expected to grow rapidly. Electronic devices contain precious and special metals including gold, silver, palladium and platinum in addition to toxic substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium and beryllium. Therefore responsible management of e-waste is becoming imperative in order to recover valuable components and properly manage hazardous and toxic components. Due to the benefits associated with treating e-waste, the WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) recycling market is likely to expand, providing growth opportunities for its participants across the value chain. According to industry estimates this market is likely to grow to $1.9 billion in the near future.
