European expenditure on environmental protection is set to top €343 billion by 2026. This is an increase of 0.7% annually from €327.8 billion in 2021, according to figures from 2017. Germany is leading the way, with €75.7 billion being spent in 2021. France, the United Kingdom and Italy are the next biggest spenders, occupying the second, third and fourth spots respectively. Luxembourg witnessed the biggest year-on-year growth, with a 6.2% increase since 2017. Bulgaria, however, showed the biggest decline, with a 4.2% decrease over the same period.
