Global demand for asbestos imports is projected to fall by 0.2% year on year to 835 million kilograms by 2026. This follows an increase of 1.8% year on year since 2017. India was the biggest importer in 2021, with 377 million kilograms, followed by China, Indonesia and Myanmar. Myanmar saw the largest yearly growth of 201.1%, while Switzerland saw the biggest decline at 68.3%. Meanwhile, global exports of asbestos are predicted to decrease by 0.6% year on year to 894 million kilograms by 2026. This follows an increase of 1.1% year on year since 2016. Russia was the largest exporter in 2021 at 624 million kilograms, followed by Kazakhstan, Brazil and China. The US saw the biggest yearly growth at 47.6%, while South Africa saw the biggest decline at 45.4%.
