Abstract

Men’s Clothing Stores in the US

The Men’s Clothing Stores industry exhibits a low level of market share concentration, with only one company, Tailored Brands Inc. (Tailored Brands), accounting for more than 5.0% of industry revenue in 2019. Another notable company is Destination XL Group Inc., which specializes in big and tall men’s apparel. Over the five years to 2019, market share concentration has increased as a result of merger and acquisition activity, as well as companies exiting the industry due to decreased demand and low returns.

Key brands and diversification drive growth

· Tailored Brands is the only major player in the Men’s Clothing Stores industry. The company operates notable brands in the industry including, Men’s Wearhouse, Men’s Wearhouse & Tux and Jos A. Bank Clothiers (JoS. A. Bank). The company also opened a flagship store for Joseph Abboud, an upscale US-based clothing brand. The company retails suits, tuxes, shirts, pants, outwear, sweaters, shoes and accessories. Furthermore, the company sells a variety of sizes, including big and tall, and provides the ability for individuals to customize their products.

Acquisitions help mitigate losses

· Over the five years to 2019, large industry operators have further secured their status by completing mergers and acquisitions of smaller companies. Most notably, Tailored Brands acquired Joseph Abboud, a large upscale US-based clothing brand, in 2013. Additionally, Tailored Brands acquired JoS. A. Bank in 2014, which now accounts for a significant portion of the parent company’s establishments.

Price and quality drive competition between operators
· Due to the discretionary nature of industry products, operators compete primarily on the basis of price. This factor is especially important among operators that target the low- to middle-income earners. Additionally, quality and style of clothing, in addition to customer service are also points of competition. Operators tend to try and provide exceptional service, quality and style to differentiate themselves from other men’s clothing retailers.

Men’s clothing stores retail a variety of men’s and boys’ suits, formal wear, shirts, t-shirts, casual slacks, jeans, sport coats, blazers, sports apparel, sweaters, overcoats, raincoats and accessories. Operators may also offer custom suits and other clothing through alterations such as hemming, taking in or letting out seams and lengthening or shortening sleeves.

This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
