Table of Contents

CEO’s 360 Degree Perspective

Critical infrastructure such as data centres, healthcare buildings, and financial institutions should be the short-term targets for BA companies to promote remote services.
Networking of buildings, building systems data, and portfolio-wide energy management will be the key developments to focus on for long-term business models.
Performance, application, service, and functionality-specific remote BA services will be the main future business models.
Customer friendliness and flexible business models and subscriptions for remote building automation (BA) services via platform-based solutions will be the key differentiators to increase market adoption.
The US, the UK, Germany, and Australia show high-growth potential in the short term, while Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Scandinavia, and China will offer medium to long-term growth potential for remote BA services.

Three Big Predictions

Buildings’ life cycle optimisation, cognitive support services, monitoring operations, system and building maintenance, event management, and energy management will be the key remote BA services to see imminent growth in the building management industry.
Interoperable BA platforms will enable the much-needed data transparency and sharing to enable community-wide building and power management, and seamless integration into grids for smarter cities.
Innovative pricing models along with key software-as-a-service (SaaS) features such as live energy consumption and cost savings tracking, automated invoicing, and payment collection will enhance BA platforms‘ remote services business model and expand customer base.

BAS Operating Platforms by a Selection of Key Participants

Niagara Framework (Tridium)
Tridium’s software platform is Niagara Framework. This platform allows integration of devices and systems independent of manufacturer or communication protocol. Moreover, it allows easy and secure control building elements and devices simply over the internet on a Web browser. Another software platform from the company is Sedona Framework, an open source platform which gives every device on the network the power to decide, control, and manage.

Metasys (Johnson Controls)
Metasys is the building automation (BA) system from JCI. Metasys, the BA platform, integrates heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), lighting, security, and protection systems, allowing interaction between devices with these functionalities. This integration allows viewing of different building zones’ and rooms’ parameters and corresponding equipment’s measure at one place in Metasys’ new user interface, and helps the building manager decide on actions accordingly.

Desigo CC (Siemens Building Technologies)
Desigo CC is the latest building automation platform from Siemens. It integrates all functionalities of buildings such as HVAC, lighting, window blinding, single room automation, fire safety, security, and energy management. The platform allows for installing more devices in the future and manages multiple systems and services. It serves for a total building solution.

Smartstruxure solution is Schneider Electric’s building management platform, which allows integration of HVAC control, lighting control, and energy management. It is a completely integrated solution which matches hardware and software with engineering, installation, and services. The platform allows to share and analyse data from HVAC, lighting, fire and safety, and electrical distribution for energy management.(Schneider Electric)

EBI (Honeywell)
Honeywell’s Enterprise Buildings Integrator (EBI) is an open standard integration platform. It allows scalability for devices with cloud connectivity. It enables integration of life safety and security systems, energy management and building management systems, and customised off-the-shelf solutions. Mobility and remote access to manage buildings via the cloud is a key feature of the platform. Fault tolerance and disaster recovery are supported by the platform.

ABB’s building management platform is DOMOOV. The platform models data points, alarming, scheduling, trending and also acts as an operating system modelling the entire network management such as channels, routers, and commissioning. The key feature of the platform is multi protocol system management tool. The tool allows interoperability and enables commissioning devices, configuration, binding, and preparing SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems based on single or multi protocols.

Neutrino-GLT (Kieback & Peter)
Kieback & Peter’s buildings management integration platform is Neutrino-GLT. It allows for integration from other manufacturers and also allows configuration for specific applications.

OpenRemote (OpenRemote, Inc)
OpenRemote is an open source integration software platform for home and building automation. Its architecture allows stand-alone, user independent control, and automation via Web browsers. User interface layout, installation, and configuration can be done remotely through cloud.

Genesis32 (ICONICS)
Genesis32 and Genesis64 are ICONICS’s automation software suites which allow complete scalability and Web-enabled HMI and SCADA applications. They also allow scheduling, alarm management, graphical trend plots, predictive fault detection, and proactive diagnostics and remote correction.

Building Automation Platforms’ Technology Roadmap—Discussion

-In the early days of BA platforms for solution-based building automation models, most offerings were restricted only to proprietary devices. All functionalities of building such as HVAC, lighting, access control, fire safety, and blinding were automated on a single BA platform to offer a holistic building solution.
-BA platforms on open standard protocols such as BACNet, LonTalk, and KNX were enabled to integrate interoperable devices from multiple manufacturers and this became a major trend in recent years. This gives the freedom to end customers and system integrators to mix and match devices for a custom-made solution.
-In the next wave of transformation, real-time remote BA services are being offered via cloud on BA platforms. This delivery model enhances the total end-user and customer purchase experience.
-Data sharing across BA platforms will truly enable advanced big data analytics and optimisation of buildings’ performance.
-Communication between interoperable BA platforms from different manufacturers will enable portfolio wide building management, energy analytics, and optimisation.
-BA platforms will enable seamless integration of buildings into grids for better power and demand response management for a mean peak performance.
-Providing an IP address to each device on the BAS with Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) and their networking will truly enable the ‘Internet of Things.’ Networking of buildings on a common platform will give rise to community-wide building management to enable smarter cities.
