Chapter 1: Introduction
An adhesive is any substance applied to the surfaces of materials that binds them together and resists separation. Its principal attribute is its ability to form strong bonds with the surfaces of a wide range of materials and to retain bond strength under expected use conditions. The use of adhesives offers many advantages over binding techniques such as sewing, mechanical fastening and thermal bonding. These include the ability to bind different materials together, the ability to distribute stress more efficiently across a joint, cost effectiveness of an easily mechanized process, an improvement in aesthetic design and increased design flexibility. Most adhesives do not have excellent bulk properties, so it is important that adhesive films are kept thin. Materials such as epoxies have bulk properties that qualify them as engineering materials, and they thus can be used in multifunctional applications. Adhesive is a general term that includes among cement, glue, mucilage and paste. All of these terms are loosely used interchangeably.

The principal advantages of adhesives include the ability to:

• Bond similar to dissimilar materials of different thicknesses.
• Enable the fabrication of complex shapes not feasible by other fastening means.
• Smooth external joint surfaces.
• Permit economic and rapid assembly.

• Dampen vibrations.
• Prevent or reduce galvanic corrosion.
• Provide thermal and electrical insulation.

The limitations of adhesives depend on the specific adhesive and application. These may include the necessity of surface preparation, long curing times, service temperature limitations, loss of properties during service, toxicity of flammability during assembly or use and the tendency of many adhesives to creep under sustained load.
