Storage Wars All-Flash Array Pioneer Violin Memory Gears up for Battle

Like a lot of homeowners, businesses are struggling with too much stuff and nowhere to put it. For the past five years, “growth of data storage” has ranked among the top three challenges facing IT organizations in Stratecast’s annual cloud survey. The challenge is real and unlikely to abate. Thanks to trends such as Internet of Things (IoT), “big data” analytics, social media connectivity, and evolving compliance requirements, data is created at an estimated rate of quintillion bytes per day.2 Not only do enterprises need to store all that data, but they need to ensure that the stored data is accessible for analysis; that it is replicated frequently to ensure data integrity and availability; and that primary and all backup storage meets security and compliance requirements.

To deal with the challenge, some companies are turning to cloud-based storage, which is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of % through 2019. 3 However, most businesses are keeping the majority of their storage firmly under their control. In fact, according to the Stratecast survey, of all enterprise workload types, storage is the most likely to remain on premises or in a co-location facility, with % of businesses procuring and maintaining Tier 1 storage systems, and % managing archival storage in their data center. 4 As a result, businesses are continually expanding and refreshing their storage systems. Storage vendors have responded by introducing new technologies, evolving from traditional hard disk to flash storage or hybrid storage.

The first quarter of 2016 alone saw the introduction of new and enhanced flash and hybrid storage systems from major vendors including IBM, EMC, HPE, and Violin Memory. But not all flash storage is alike; and the pioneer in this market, Violin Memory, continues to evolve its products to be denser, higher performance, and more cost effective than competitors’ offerings. Violin, which revolutionized the “flash storage array” several years ago with a patented design, has recently introduced product enhancements that make storage simpler, more resilient, and easier to manage. In this analysis, Stratecast examines business needs that are driving today’s storage solutions, particularly flash storage technologies. We also look at how Violin Memory’s innovative technology addresses key enterprise storage challenges.
