This BCC Research report determines the current status of the global market for dye solar cells (DSC) and assesses its growth potential over a five-year period between 2015 and 2020.

Use this report to:

Learn about the advantages DSCs offer compared with the other main commercial PV technologies. Analyze detailed cost projections for the production of dye solar modules (DSMs) from 2014 to 2020 based on forecast demand over the period.
Receive information about the photovoltaic industry on a global basis, including manufacturing capacity and consumption by various regional markets.
Gain insight into DSCs, a third generation PV technology, as well as perovskite sensitize cells.

Highlights

The global market for installed photovoltaic power reached 42,000 MW in 2014.

The market is expected to reach 70,000 MW by 2020 from 50,000 MW million in 2015, increasing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 70.0% from 2015 to 2020.

Silicon monocrystalline technology is expected to grow from 22,500 MW in 2015 to 28,000 MW in 2020 at a CAGR of 4.5% for the period 2015-2020.

CIGS technology will grow from 1,500 MW in 2015 to 9,000 MW in 2020 at a CAGR of 43.1% for the period 2015-2020.

This report is intended to:

Determine the production and consumption of solar modules from 2015 to 2020, compared with base year 2014, both on a global and regional basis.
The main PV technologies currently in the market will be analyzed, with a special focus on the growth prospects for DSC technology.
Evaluate the increase of efficiency from PV conversions using DSC technologies from 2010 to 2014.
Analyze the advantages DSCs offer compared with the other main commercial PV technologies.
Analyze detailed cost projections for the production of dye solar modules (DSMs) from 2014 to 2020 based on forecast demand over the period.

Study both production and consumption by geographical area in the main areas where DSCs show applications in the short and medium term, and compared with other PV technologies in the following market segments: Integration as an architectural element in buildings, or building integrated

photovoltaic systems (BIPV).
PV production plants.
Integration into low-power electronics of mass consumption

Analyze the evolution of papers and patents for the main PV technologies and DSCs broken down by regions from 2004 to 2014.
Provide a sound basis for decision-making with solid dates to help increase investment in new emerging solar technologies such as DSC.

REASONS FOR DOING THE STUDY

The development of a primary supply of clean and sustainable energy is a top global issue. Fossil fuels account for around 85% of global energy demand, with the burning of these resources linked to global warming and climate change. The statistics for increasing energy demand and depleting fossil fuels are alarming: (i) global energy consumption is expected to increase twofold by 2050; and (ii) due to depleting fossil fuel reserves, additional energy demand equal to today’s total energy consumption is expected in the next three decades. In 2014 energy consumption stood at around 15 Terawatts (TW), but is expected to rise by another 15 TW by 2050, due to continued industrialization. Among renewable energy resources, solar energy alone has the potential to meet the world’s primary energy demand, which would require covering less than 0.4% of our planet’s surface with 15% efficient solar panels. Alternatively, using 25% efficient solar panels, a solar farm with an area of around 400 km by 400 km in the Sahara desert would meet the projected energy demand. Above all, energy derived from sunlight is 200 times more abundant than all other renewable energy resources combined. This report will provide information on DSC technologies, which may be useful to investors and decision makers. In addition, this report includes an analysis of market advances since 1991 — when Michael Grätzel — inventor of third-generation solar technology — published the first report — through to 2014, including forecast trends and sales from 2015 to 2020.

SCOPE OF REPORT

The scope of this study encompasses the major DSC markets, according to region, through to 2014, with forecasts from 2015 to 2020. This BCC Research analysis also compares DSCs against other commercialized solar technologies, such as monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon and thin-films (e.g., amorphous silicon, cadmium telluride, copper indium diselenide). Further, the report analyzes each technology — but will focus on DSCs and examine its current and potential efficiency — assess the current market status of each, examine their future market impact and give PV production and sales volumes for 2014, as well as projections during the period from 2015 to 2020. Various technical issues are discussed and a thorough economic analysis of each technology and its impact on future growth is presented. We also examined the main areas where DSC applications show strong potential in the short and medium term, and conducted a comparison with other major PV technologies in the market: BIPV, PV production plants and integration into low-power consumer electronics. In this report, we analyze the PV industry on a global basis, including manufacturing capacity and consumption by various regional markets. We also examine the research efforts of research centers and companies over PV technologies, in particular DSCs.
