Fewer than 2 million pay TV subscribers will be lost in North America between 2016 and 2021. Digital TV Research believes that the cord-cutting phenomenon will slow considerably. However, only two of the 25 operators (across 44 platforms) covered in the North America Pay TV Operator Forecasts report will increase their subscriber counts between 2015 and 2021.

With satellite (DirecTV) and IPTV (U-Verse) assets, AT&T is North America’s top pay TV operator – and will remain so for at least the next five years. Three companies control two-thirds of US pay TV subs.

AT&T ($30.67 billion in 2016) is the largest pay TV operator measured by subscription and PPV revenues – commanding more than twice as much as its nearest rival. However, AT&T will lose revenues (down $4.7 billion between 2016 and 2021) - following the pattern of all other major operators.

Market maturity has led to several other mergers and acquisitions, including Charter buying Time Warner Cable and Bright House and Altice purchasing a 70% stake in both Cablevision and Suddenlink.
