Water and waste management is a global issue. It is a growing issue linked directly to the way society produces and consumes. Advanced oxidation technologies for purification applications to water and wastewater have been used for more than 30 years. Advanced oxidation technologies use ozone, or combinations of ozone, UV light and hydrogen peroxide to degrade compounds such as pharmaceutical and personal care byproducts and endocrine disrupting compounds, while also providing disinfection. In recent years, advanced oxidation technologies have gained increasing interest due to their outstanding technical characteristics for eliminating a wide variety of pollutants normally present in all types of water and wastewater. Major industrial sectors (oil and gas, food and beverage, mining) and municipal bodies are expecting to increase the use of oxidation technologies in water and wastewater treatment in the face of worldwide tightening of environmental regulations and a squeeze on global water resources. However, use of advance oxidation technologies for water purification and wastewater treatment are not widespread. It is generally limited to sites that face issues with the presence of organic compounds that are resistant to biological treatment (recalcitrant), are not efficiently removed via adsorption or volatilization or are very toxic and hazardous (like radioactive waste).
