These hybrid devices—which combine OCT’s with devices such as fundus cameras, scanning laser ophthalmoscopes (SLO), or angiography devices—allow ophthalmologist to be more efficient with both their time and space in their practices. This increase in efficiency can lead directly to increased profits for ophthalmologists. The market for standalone OCT has been around for some time now and so new machines are being sold to replace older technology. Spectral domain equipment is frequently being positioned in the market as a replacement for older time-domain technology.
The unit sale growth of the OCT market is expected to continue; however, it will slow throughout the forecast as the initial growth of hybrid devices also slows. Once this initial growth has ended it should stabilize to a low growth rate correlated to natural growth in the number of ophthalmic practices as populations grow. In addition, the replacement market will be stimulated over the forecast period as early users of OCTs are expected to upgrade to more advanced models. Also, optometrists have begun to purchase standalone OCT equipment in Europe. This is most notable in Germany, where a market for OCTs in the lower end of the pricing range is opening up in the optometry space.
In an effort to cater to the precise workflow requirements in ophthalmology and optometry settings, several of the largest OCT manufacturers have launched devices that combine OCT with another form of retinal imaging. The most common combination is OCT with fundus photography, although OCT has been combined with scanning laser ophthalmoscope equipment (SLO) as well. These devices offer the benefit of minimizing the space taken up by retinal imaging equipment and can contribute to workflow efficiency as the need to move patients around the practice is reduced.
Abstract
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a technique that allows physicians to acquire images of translucent or opaque material (such as biological tissue) at resolutions similar to low-power microscopes. The devices that make use of this technology to perform retinal imaging have become an integral part of tracking the progress of treatment and pathology for several important ocular diseases. The technique is often termed ‘optical ultrasound’ as imaging reflections within tissue are collected to provide cross-sectional images or topographic maps of the retinal surface. OCT is a non-invasive method of imaging the structure of the retina and provides physicians with information to detect ocular conditions such as macular holes, pre-retinal membranes, macular swelling or optic nerve damage. OCT devices are a particularly important diagnostic tool in the context of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
